The Stable

Firle, E. Sussex

Will's grandfather, John Schwerdt, converted The Stable in 1988, winning a Civic Trust Award. In 2017, church wardens and passionate gardeners Liz and Jen asked us to replace its conservatory. This was a challenge because the site was a dark corner under a high flint wall. To steal light and to get big views towards the Sweet Chestnut at the end of the garden, we built a room with a periscope lantern and a lifted roof. The building is painted estate green with strong white steel columns, a nod to John's design - potting shed modernism.
