Shepherd's Cottage

Firle, E. Sussex

Shepherd’s Cottage can be found below the slopes of Firle Beacon in splendid isolation. The whole cottage has been restored back to how we imagine the shepherd would have left it when the last big flocks of sheep were moved off the downs for the last time at the outbreak of the second world war. Every wall in the house has been lime plastered and lime washed with paint made by Simon March in Hastings. Upstairs the bedrooms have been decorated using hand cut stencils of Firle Tower, an oak leaf and a Southdown sheep. In the sitting room a Firle wallpaper was designed and printed on hemp paper for the cottage showing interesting local barns and buildings on the Estate.
